Top 6 Home Organization Ideas that “Spark Joy” for Buyers:  Tips 1-3

You may remember the TV series “Tidying Up” about home organization.  The host  encouraged viewers to downsize the number of things in their homes, commonly known as “decluttering”, and only keep items that “spark joy.”

With the holidays right around the corner, and since some of us are spending more time at home than usual, this is a great time to do some decluttering and add organization to your home. Not only will you be more organized, you will feel like you have more room in your home, and best of all, your efforts can actually increase the value of your home.

Ready to “spark joy” for you and your property value?   See tips 1-3 below (tips 4-6 will be coming next week):

  •  Bathroom Makeover on a shoestring!

Has it been a while since you’ve gone through the cabinets and drawers in your bathroom?  If it has, it would be a great idea to take everything out, one cabinet or drawer at a time (so it’s not so overwhelming).  You can do this over a several days or take a weekend day and hop to it!  Toss any expired products or items you don’t use anymore.  If they are still in date consider donating to a local charity.

For drawers yo can add drawer organizers, with smaller spaces for makeup and jewelry. Roll-out shelves, baskets, or even standing drawer organizers can maximize the use of space in deep cavernous cabinets!

Empty wall space can become useful also if you have a lot of extra space. Open racks/shelves/hooks can be mounted for extra storage.  Get creative with your storage ideas!  Inexpensive additions can give your bathroom a custom feel and make your morning routine more organized.  Plus, minor bathroom remodeling projects tend to increase the value your home!

  1. How about a Utility Room Upgrade?

Go through everything in your utility room, and donate or dispose of anything you no longer use.  Old towels and mismatched socks need to go away. Then you can focus on organizing what you have left!

A mix of cabinets and open cubbies and will give you plenty of options for organization.  Any blank spaces can be filled with baskets and laundry organizers to sort your clothes before washing. A dowel rod for hanging clothes, a drying rack for delicates, and a flat work surface for ironing and folding clothes are great additions to your laundry room!

  1. Use Your Attic to Your Advantage!

Attics can easily become clutter magnets. If yours looks like a dumping ground for all kinds of stuff, you need to do a thorough clean out.

After that you can begin to make a plan to better use those spaces. If you have access to an indoor attic, consider if you have enough square footage to remodel it into a small exercise or storage room, or consider adding a cedar closet to store off-season items.  Remodeling your attic into more usable square footage can increase the value of your home.
